Lee Hampton

We use Perch on all our projects and while our team of developers find the support documentation really good, there is no documentation (as far as I can see) which shows the client (end user) the basics of using Perch's admin area.

Are there any plans for a short pdf which runs through the basics, so it can be given to a client? I understand that each site is different but having something that covers the fundamental basics would be a big help to be able to leave with a client rather than having to go through it each time or doing screen casts etc etc.

I appreciate that it's a bit of a difficult thing, I was thinking more along the basic structure of the backend, so something that explains, what each element links to, how pages work, what the page regions area is for, whats the difference between a page title and a navigation title (i know for people in the know they understand page title is the meta title at the top) but our clients are a lot less tech savvy. Explaining what regions are and how you delete a page would be good, that type of thing.

So for example, in order to change a user password, it seems the right route is to go to roles and then edit the user, but you actually have to go to 'My Account' in the top right to edit this.

It is more something that gives a good overview, even a screen cast based on a standard backend would be useful as we could then give them as a reference for them to get to grips with it.

By the way just as a side note, we all think your CMS is cracking.

3 days, 23 hours since original post

I've only just installed the app and can see already it's possible to limit which members can edit which pages, using the restrict access by tag option.

Add Page documentation appears to be wrong/problematic

Thomas Green

In view of your request for help in improving Perch documentation, I would like to alert you to a problem area for Perch newbies. It's had me tangled lots of times.

In the 'Add page' dialogue the File name field help text says "The file extension will be created automatically". This seems to be wrong, or at least the Perch navigation system gets confused. After getting tangled on this issue many times, I think I've sorted out what actually happens and where the problem is.

I'm creating a Perch page for a page that already exists, called /cats.php.
When I put 'cats' in the Page title field, the file name field defaults to 'cats'. If I leave that as is, the navigation link provided by perch_pages_navigation points to '/cats', which of course doesn't exist.

If I put 'cats.php' in the field the navigation works fine. But that definitely is not what the Help text tells me to do.

Also .... I read that page references should always be root-relative. Obediently I try to follow instructions. That works nicely for content_custom. But if I follow that advice when creating a new page, I get a surprise. If I enter /cats.php, making the link root-relative as instructed, then next time I look at page options, it says '//cats.php".

There are two problems here, or so it seems to me. (1) The help text shouldn't say that the extension will be added, because it isn't added. (2) The / behaviour should be consistent. If I'm required to write root-relative file names in one context, then I should at least be allowed to write root-relative file names in another context. [I've done HCI research on issues of consistency: believe me, this sort of inconsistency tangles beginners up badly.] You could fix the inconsistency in various ways; for example if the field that's input already starts with / you could open a dialogue to say "the address should be normally start with / not //, shall I change that?"

I hope this will be a helpful comment. It's meant to be!
